Top U.S. Selling Games of All Time: Violence and Football - Halo 2 Represents
And depending on one’s view of American football, there’s really only one (that’s right, 1) genre that dominates the Forbes’s Top 10 list from NPD of the Best Selling Home Video Games of All Time, in units sold, in the United States. Now, just for accuracy, NPD’s data “only” goes back to 1989, so this cannot include units sold before then in case Americans have recently changed their favorite genre.
All in All, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA:SA) is the overall individual winner at 9.4 million units sold. Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock comes in at 8.2 million, but after that, there’s nothing but football games and shooters(FPS): Three versions of Madden (06, 07 and 08), Vice City, Halo 2 and Call of Duty 4.
The funny part is this list is already out of date. Grand Theft Auto IV has managed to ship 11 million copies and sold 8.5 million, with an analyst saying it’ll probably move 15 million by the end of the month. To be completely honest, that’s a global figure, but really, who wouldn’t expect it to park at No. 1 and bump the 10th place Madden ‘05 off the list.
