Microsoft Says Some Xbox 360 Games May Be “Fixed” For New Service, Games On Demand
Microsoft will begin offering full retail games like Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect as downloadable games via their Xbox Live Marketplace service, Games On Demand starting this August. By using this service, the games will boot straight from your hard drive, just like normal installable games.
That sounds like a great service, but if you remember, some games don’t quite work as well from the hard drive as when playing from a DVD. Games like Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV don’t perform nearly as well, because they were designed to be streamed from a DVD. Well, Microsoft may be addressing that problem when it launches Games On Demand.
Microsoft reps have said that any game planned for a Games On Demand release will go through a “rigorous” QA process to make sure they work precisely as intended when they are played from a hard drive.
And blockbusters like Halo 3 and GTA IV may need to be “fixed” to become a Games On Demand, but that seems to be something Microsoft is willing to do.
These Xbox 360 games offered via Games On Demand downloads will be available for purchase via the Web Marketplace.
