An Ohio judge has granted Daniel Petric a lenient sentence last week, citing the teen’s video game addiction to Halo 3 as a potential contributing factor in the 2007 shooting that left his mother dead and father wounded.

We’ve been following this story since it began in early 2008. 16-year-old Daniel Petric, became enraged at his parents for taking away the copy of Halo 3 that he had purchased against their wishes, shot both of his parents in the head with his father’s 9mm handgun, after asking they close their eyes because he had “a surprise” for them. While his father, minister Mark Petric, survived the shooting, his mother did not.

Halo: ODST is Bungie’s attempt to bring players back into the universe of Halo without its central character. But can a Halo game be fun without the Master Chief?

While we haven’t had the chance to play any of the campaign yet, ODST’s new multiplayer mode, Firefight, was at E3 for some serious play testing.

Originally named Halo 3: Recon, ODST puts you in the shoes of a UNSC Orbital Drop Shock Trooper during the events leading up to Halo 3. This first-person shooter takes place in New Mombasa. At the beginning of the game the player gets separated from the rest team during a drop.

Halo: ODST is due out Sept. 22, and after playing several rounds of multiplayer Firefight, which has a team of gamers taking on increasingly difficult waves of enemies, the matches seemed very polished.

With E3’s hype train having come and gone, gamers are free to weigh up the holiday season’s planned releases, and make plans themselves. Such as which of the games they’re going to actually buy.

Market research firm Nielsen ran a poll from June 7-14, and asked gamers which of the year’s big Christmas or 2010 releases they’d either “definitely” or “probably” be picking up. You can see the results of that study below.
